Daily Poetry ("we", "us") is a reading app that delivers one hand-picked poem each day, with a short analysis. We built it to be quiet and private: you do not need an account, and we collect only what the service needs to work. This policy explains what we collect, why, who receives it, how long we keep it, and how to have it deleted. In short: we do not track you across other apps or websites, we do not show ads, and we do not sell your data.
Who we are. Daily Poetry is operated by Poetry Atlas. You can reach us at support@dailypoetry.co.
Information we collect
- No account, no name, no email. The app has no sign-in. Reading the daily poem does not ask for your name, email, phone number, location, or contacts.
- A device identifier. The first time you open the app it creates a random identifier (a UUID). It is not your advertising identifier and it is not linked to your name or email. The app keeps it in the iOS Keychain, so it may survive deleting and reinstalling the app. You can see it in the app under Settings, as your "data ID"; you will need it to ask us to access or delete this data (see below). The app sends it to our server with its requests. We use it to remember which poems we have already shown this device, to store your favourites and ratings, and to keep usage of the pronunciation and translation aids within fair limits.
- Reading history on our server. For each device identifier we store which poems we have shown it and when, so the daily poem and "next poem" do not repeat.
- Favourites. If you mark a poem as a favourite, the poem and your choice are stored on our server against your device identifier. The total number of favourites a poem has may be shown to all readers; who made them is not.
- Poem ratings. If you rate a poem, the star rating is stored on our server against your device identifier (one rating per device per poem, which you can change). We use ratings only in aggregate, to help us curate the catalogue. They do not personalize what you are shown. The average rating and the number of ratings for a poem may be shown to all readers.
- Comments and your reader name. As soon as you open a comments area in the app, even if you never post, the app creates a random secret on your device (also kept in the Keychain) and our server creates a reader profile for it: an automatically generated reader name and avatar. We store only a one-way hash of the secret. You can change your reader name to any name you like, including your real name, and you can change your avatar and add a profile photo. Your reader name is public, so do not use your real name unless you want it shown; the photo is resized, stripped of its metadata and stored on our server. Your comment text (up to 2,000 characters), reader name, avatar, photo if any, the time, and the poem, analysis or poet it is attached to are public to everyone using the app. Please do not put personal information in a comment or photo. Unless your reader profile has been suspended, you can edit or delete your own comments and remove your photo in the app; a deleted comment disappears from the discussion and its stored text is replaced. If you are suspended, you can ask us by email to remove them (see below).
- Reports and blocks. If you report a comment, we store the comment, your reader profile and your reason (spam, abusive or harmful, other) so we can review it. If you block a reader, we store the block so their comments stay hidden from you. We may hide comments and suspend readers who misuse the comments area.
- Error reports (optional). When you report an error in a poem, analysis or biography, we store your selected category and description, the poem or author reference, the displayed language, app version, and submission time. We do not store your device identifier or reader profile with the report, and it needs no contact details. Please do not include personal information in your description.
- Word and phrase lookups. When you tap a word to see its meaning or translation, the app sends that word or short phrase and language codes to our server, which forwards it to Google Cloud Translation (translation) and to Wiktionary, run by the Wikimedia Foundation (definitions). The word is taken from a poem you are reading; your own comments and notes are never sent. They receive the word or phrase and language, together with our server's address, not your device identifier. We do not save your lookups.
- Pronunciation and translation aids. When you ask for a line-by-line translation or pronunciation guide for a poem, our server sends the text of that poem from our catalogue (which can be the whole poem or an excerpt) to Google Cloud Translation or OpenAI to produce it, and keeps the result. Your own comments, notes and reader name are never sent to them. Your device identifier is recorded with the request only to apply usage limits.
- Search. The words you type in search are sent to our server to find poems and poets. We do not save them in our database; they may appear in the technical logs described below.
- Stored only on your device. Your reading settings (languages, font size, theme), your private notes, and the offline copies of recent poems are stored on your device only; we do not keep a copy. To fetch content, however, the app sends the languages you have chosen and your display language as part of its requests (for example "give me today's poem in French and Russian"), so our server sees those choices at the time of each request, together with your device identifier.
- Images. Author portraits are loaded by the app directly from the image sources named in our data, such as Wikimedia Commons, and reader avatar animations are loaded from an image-storage address used by the app. Those hosts receive your IP address and the image requested, and their own policies apply.
- Daily reminder (optional). If you turn on the reminder, iOS schedules it locally on your device. It uses no push token and no remote push service, and no notification data leaves your device. You can turn it off at any time in the app or in your device settings.
- Sharing and links. If you share a poem, the app shares a link to it through the iOS share sheet. The "watch or listen" link opens a YouTube search page outside our app; YouTube's own policies apply from that point.
- No analytics, no ads, no tracking. The app contains no advertising, analytics, or crash-reporting software from us or from third parties, and does not use your advertising identifier. If you choose in iOS settings to share app analytics with developers, Apple may give us aggregated reports; we do not receive anything that identifies you.
- Server logs. Like any internet request, the app's and the website's requests carry your device's IP address to our hosting provider, which records standard server logs (IP address, request path, timestamp, user agent) for security and reliability, which our host keeps for about 30 days. Our servers also use your IP address, in memory, to limit abuse. Our website additionally loads fonts from Google Fonts; Google receives your IP address as part of serving those fonts. The website sets no cookies and uses no analytics.
We do not ask for, and do not want, sensitive personal information. We do not collect payment information: the app is free and has no purchases.
How we use information
- To deliver the daily poem and its analysis, avoid repeating poems, and keep your favourites and ratings.
- To show comments, and to review reports and keep the comments area safe.
- To translate or explain the words and poems you ask about.
- To send the daily-poem reminder, if you have enabled it (on your device).
- To keep the app and website working, secure, and within fair-use limits, and to fix problems.
- To understand, in aggregate, which poems resonate, so we can curate better.
How information is shared
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it with data brokers. We use no data to track you across apps or websites. Comments, reader names, avatars and photos are public by design. Beyond that, we share information only with service providers that help us operate, and only as needed:
- Hosting - our backend, database and website run on Railway, which processes requests, stores our data and keeps server logs on our behalf.
- Image hosts - Wikimedia Commons and similar sources serve author portraits straight to your device (see "Images" above).
- Google Cloud Translation - receives the words, phrases or poem text (or excerpts) to be translated, and language codes.
- Wikimedia (Wiktionary) - receives the word you look up.
- OpenAI - receives poem text (or excerpts) to produce pronunciation guides.
- Google Fonts - serves the typefaces used on our website.
Our servers and database are located in the United States (California). If you use the app from outside the United States, your data is transferred to and stored in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those of your country. We transfer it because it is needed to provide the service you ask for (performance of our agreement with you) and, for security and fair-use limits, our legitimate interests; where your country requires further safeguards for such transfers, we will apply them. Our other providers (Google, OpenAI, Wikimedia) may process data in other countries too. We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
Data retention and deletion
Settings, notes and offline copies on your device remain until you clear them or delete the app. On our servers we do not currently delete anything automatically after a set time. Reading history, favourites, ratings and reading-aid usage records tied to a data ID, reader profiles, comments, photos, reports and blocks are kept until they are deleted, on request or by you in the app. A comment you delete disappears from the discussion and its stored text is replaced; a removed photo is deleted from our server. Comments we hide for breaking the rules, and the reports about them, may be kept for moderation records. Reports and blocks needed for moderation may be kept. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for about 30 days and are used only for security and reliability. When data is deleted it is removed from our live database immediately, and from our database backups as they expire, within about 90 days.
Deleting things yourself. In the app you can edit or delete your comments, remove your photo, change your reader name, and clear the notes and settings on your device. A suspended reader cannot do these things in the app and must ask us by email instead.
Asking us to access or delete your data. Open Settings in the app, copy your data ID, and email it to support@dailypoetry.co saying whether you want a copy of the data or its deletion. We act on a request only if it quotes a data ID, because that random identifier is shown only inside your app; a reader name alone is public and proves nothing. If the request also concerns your reader profile and comments, tell us your reader name and we may ask you to make a small change in the app, such as temporarily setting your reader name to a code we send you, to show that the profile is yours. A suspended reader cannot make that change, so we will ask for the data ID from Settings together with the reader name, the poem and approximate time of the comment, and may decline to act if we cannot reasonably match them. We reply within 30 days. Once the request is confirmed, we delete the reading history, favourites, ratings and usage records tied to that data ID and, if you asked, the reader profile, comments and photo, and tell you what was done or what we could not match. Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to access, correct or delete your data, and to complain to your data protection authority; we will honour them as the law requires.
Children
Daily Poetry is for people aged 13 and over, as our Terms also say; where your country sets a higher age for consenting to online services, that age applies. Because comments, reader names and photos are public, parents should know that the app lets readers post publicly. Daily Poetry is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, for example if we add sign-in, payments or new features that collect data, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you in the app or on this page. The date at the top always shows when this policy last changed.
